Painting asphalt shingles white is not the way to a cooler roof. On this San Jose home we replaced a worn shingle roof with cool roof shingles from Owens Corning’s Duration COOL line, added new white gutters, a chimney cricket and a spark arrestor, and finished the job under a City of San Jose reroof permit.
Should We Paint Our Asphalt Shingle Roof White for Energy Savings in San Jose?
Usually not. Asphalt shingles are not made to be painted, and a coat of paint can trap moisture, peel within a few seasons and put the shingle warranty at risk, so the better way to get a reflective roof is to install cool roof shingles when the roof is due for replacement anyway. On this San Jose home we did exactly that: the worn shingles came off and an 18-square Owens Corning Duration COOL roof went on, with solar-reflective granules built into the shingle instead of painted over it. A homeowner on r/HomeImprovement asked exactly this after her husband proposed painting their shingle roof white.
An Aging Gray Roof on a Sunny San Jose Lot
The existing asphalt shingles on this San Jose home had reached the end of their service life: the ridge and field were worn flat and gray, and the brick chimney had an open flue with no spark arrestor and no cricket to divert water around its upslope side. A coat of paint would not have fixed any of that. The roof needed replacing, and the replacement was a chance to put on a shingle that reflects more of the sun’s heat in the first place.

Cool Roof Shingles Instead of a Coat of Paint
We specified Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration COOL shingles in a gray colorway over Owens Corning Titanium UDL 50 synthetic underlayment, with Owens Corning Starter Strip Plus at the eaves and rakes. Duration COOL is the solar-reflective version of the Duration shingle: the reflective granules are part of the shingle, so the roof keeps its normal look and its manufacturer warranty, which a painted roof can lose. The same visit added a chimney cricket, a spark arrestor and about 80 feet of new white gutters. It is the same system we install on most roof replacements in San Jose, and our cool roofing page covers the other reflective options.
Permit, Tear-Off, Underlayment, Shingles
The homeowner signed in mid-December 2025, and a City of San Jose reroof permit was pulled before any work began. In early January 2026 the crew tore the old shingles off down to the board deck, checked the boards, and rolled out Titanium UDL 50 synthetic underlayment across the whole roof.

Starter strip went along the eaves and rakes, then the 18 squares of Duration COOL shingles, new pipe flashings and roof vents. At the chimney the crew built a cricket on the upslope side so water is turned around the brick instead of pooling against it, and capped the flue with a spark arrestor. The old gutters came down and roughly 80 feet of new white gutters went up before cleanup.

Why Cool Roof Shingles Make Sense in San Jose
San Jose summers put long hours of sun on residential roofs, and much of that heat ends up in the attic. The cool roof shingles San Jose homes can wear in ordinary colors reflect more of it without changing how the house looks, and California’s Title 24 energy code already pushes reroofs toward reflective products in many parts of the state. Paint is a coating that wears; a cool-rated shingle is the roof. Cool Roof Questions From San Jose Homeowners
Do cool roof shingles have to be white?
No. Cool roof shingles get their reflectivity from specially made granules, not from a white color, so they come in ordinary shades. This San Jose roof is a mid-gray Owens Corning Duration COOL shingle that looks like any other architectural shingle from the street.
Do you need a permit to replace a roof in San Jose?
Yes. The City of San Jose requires a building permit for a reroof, and the work is inspected. We pulled the reroof permit for this home before tear-off began and handled the inspection scheduling.
How much does a roof replacement cost in San Jose?
Most homes come in between $12,000 and $30,000 for a full shingle roof replacement. Roof size, pitch, deck condition, and extras such as gutters or chimney work move the number, and our San Jose roof replacement page explains how a written quote is built.
